Drive time

Driving anywhere more than 10 minutes away used to fill me with anticipation and excitement. I'd grab some great driving music and - in spite of what I planned - who knew what might happen enroute? It was just an adventure waiting to happen.

Sometime in the past five years that attitude changed. Driving has become a tedious task that steals hours (or even minutes!) I'd rather be using for something else. So, the past two days have been a rare treat, with time spent on the road offering something more than regret over what I could be doing if not stuck behind the wheel.

Thursday I used my lunch break at work to drive to a nearby small town on a "dear husband" errand. My sister texted me at work a few minutes before I left, wanting to know when she could call for a visit. I called her as I drove off the work site and we talked all the way to town and back to work (yes, even through the shopping stop at Orscheln's and the Sonic drive-through - I am rude!). She is an amazing woman who inspires and motivates me, so I'm always kicking myself for not making more effort to stay in touch, plus I owed her a "thank you" for my Christmas gifts: a cute tea kettle and "The Year of Living Biblically" by A.J. Jacobs. Some day I will share more about sister Katy-Did, my best friend since the baby days (even though she claims I intentionally dropped her favorite dolly down the outhouse hole).

Yesterday's drive gave me a chance to listen to a great teaching on the local Christian radio station - some comments on marriage by Pastor Joe of Straight from the Heart. He talked about raising boys and girls and observing there is a line girls will cross when arguing (name-calling, insult-hurling) that boys will not. This was his lead-in to a discussion of women living in the language of love and men living in the language of respect, and that as women we are called to love our husbands with reverent love while men are called to love their wives with agape love. I wondered how often I bother to communicate to Amazing Husband my respect and admiration for him. It's there - hugely - but does he know it?

What do you think about the differences in how men and women love each other?
